Next Friday 21st/06, the Mutant Institute of Environmental Narratives hosts Fito Conesa's Workshop 'Comunicador Inter-especial I [Inter-special Communicator I]: The prediction of the common moorhen and the common swift'. *6.30 – 8.00 pm Comunicador Inter-especial is a mutating narrative on how different species communicate. Based on certain scientific studies and the use of fictional accounts, the aim is to convey a message through a chain of beings from different species. The objective is to demonstrate possible communication networks between species by means of fiction and scientific research and thereby foster mutually beneficial relationships between humans and all kinds of non-human entities. The workshops will bring together climate change experts, biologists, telecoms engineers and the public in an exercise to co-create environmental narratives, the starting point being the common moorhen and the common swift species of bird in Madrid Río. > Nave 16 > Free entrance until complete capacity. Initiated in 2018 as a joint project appearing across four institutions—MAAT (Lisbon), Bildmuseet (Umeå), HeK (Basel) and LABoral (Gijón), in collaboration with Royal Academy (London)—Eco-Visionaries has a new presentation at Matadero Madrid, with an expanded selection of projects and artworks that highlight the future of interspecies relationships. Avoiding a narrow emphasis on climate change, Eco-Visionaries is a manifesto-exhibition focusing on the impacts of rapidly changing ecological conditions. Global warming, extreme weather events, rising sea-levels, drought in one location while another gets flooded, are some of the ways in which this shift is felt on a day-to-day basis. These natural phenomena join environmental crises produced by the depletion of resources, the continued use of fossil fuels, the impacts of mass-consumption, and varied forms of contamination, including plastic-ridden oceans and a declining biodiversity. Together, these phenomena are increasingly recognised as the expression of a new geological era marked by human action, which many now call the Anthropocene. In face of this condition, what new conceptions and systems of thought might a rising ecological awareness inspire? The exhibition ‘ECO-VISIONARIES Art for a planet in a state of emergency’ opens next Thursday. ECO-VISIONARIES is curated by Pedro Gadanho, Mariana Pestana and the Matadero Madrid team. We have had the honor of participating with the exhibition design. ECO- VISIONARIES collects the work of more than forty artists and architects who respond to the urgency of the environmental crisis threatening our planet. This exhibition is parallel to the Cyborg Garden and the Mutant Institute of Environmental Narratives. For a year, we have been working on two very interesting processes, together with a team of artists, engineers, architects and technicians from different fields. On the one hand, in the creation of a Cyborg Garden for Matadero Madrid. A research project to test replicable strategies of intervention in the public space, for the adaptation to climate change. On the other hand, in the start-up of the Mutant Institute of Environmental Narratives, a framework to rethink the relationships between culture and nature, from fiction.
