129 · MACHANGUITOS Strange stories of mutant inhabitants ABSTRACTIntervenciones periódicas en los patios de Conde Duque, Madrid The proposal consists of a series of periodic interventions in the courtyards of the Conde Duque Cultural Centre using street furniture installations that make flexible use of the space. The project starts off with the story of the Conde Duque itself and takes it to the creation of a "fictionized" intallation. The tales of the Conde Duque make up a sort of "script" of the past that becomes the starting point for writing a new "script" for the present and future of the Centre, using the courtyards as "stages". The interventions will successively present characters called the Machanguitos (Silly-billies), new inhabitants of the Centre who little by little begin to populate its outdoor spaces, inviting visitors to acknowledge the Conde Duque in other ways. The project develops in four phases, the first two of which have already been accomplished: (1) Literary workshop. The first phase delved into the histories and tales of the Conde Duque, paying special attention to the imaginaries regarding living with monstrosity. This literary workshop was led by the writer and cultural critic Eva Cid, who offered a set […]

Re-designing nature-cultures

LOVE BOAT VALENCIA
cruise #ecoethics
Love Boat. A Journey Around Other Ecologies. ABSTRACTThe Love Boat proposes an exercise through eco-ethics in order to design an enclosed frame of cohabitation: a holiday cruise. Divided into groups, students designed a limited leisure space, according to a specific eco-ethic principle. Thus, each team will have the responsibility to consider the distribution of roles, the social organization of space, experience conditions, the pace configuration, the politics of communal living, the materiality, etc. They will have to do this exploring the design potential involved in by each of the assigned eco-ethical positions. In the context of climate change, eco-ethics appear to challenge classical ethics, those heirs of the Enlightenment, expanding vocabularies and abilities to address and describe certain ecological problems. The eco-ethics open up new discussions, such as intergenerational justice or interscalar relationships that go beyond the scope of conventional ethics, as they had been outlined during Modernity. The Love Boat aims to promote a collaborative discussion, through a collective game, about some of the major eco-ethical approaches from which we can address issues related to climate change. Each of the critical positions treated (anthropocentrism, biocentrism, ecocentrism, ecofeminism, environmental justice, queer ecology), not only implements tools and design strategies to […]

ENERGY ISLAND
crisis cabinet #wetraders
energy island ABSTRACTEnergy Island. Crisis Cabinet of Political Fictions We-Traders. Swapping Crisis for City. Goethe-Institut ‘We-Traders. Swapping Crisis for City’ is a project by the Goethe-Institut that connects since 2013 initiatives by artists, designers, activists and citizens from Lisbon, Madrid, Toulouse, Turin and Berlin. As stated by the curators “Angelika Fitz and Rose Epple, We-Trade increases ecological, economic and social sustainability. ‘We-Traders. Swapping Crisis for City’ creates a knowledge and production platform for current and future We-Traders”. Within the activities of We-Traders, Elii + CCPF will prepare a Crisis Gabinet of Political Fictions to analyse the following radical crisis scenario: Within the deep and discontinuous changes that the energy sector has undergone in recent years, the Spanish Government plans to turn Spain into an Energy Island in the year 2020. The objective is to achieve the country's energy independence by 2020, coinciding with the Europe 2020 Project. This transformation poses new challenges for our cities, landscapes, production models, consumption patterns, legal frameworks, domestic behaviours, etc. A whole new strategy that entails the citizens’ participation is needed to develop and optimize the energy production infrastructures according to maximum efficiency criteria and, at the same time, rethink our ways of life. The […]

BLACK BOXES ARE ORANGE
invisible city #aarhus
Black boxes are actually orange memoriaRendering visible the invisible Aarhus An ‘invisible city’ or ‘black box’ runs parallel to the day-to-day surface of Aarhus, remaining silent, unnoticed. Paradoxically, this invisible stratum is where many of the most relevant decisions concerning the city are made: the ‘black box’ is the space where Aarhus agrees on its relationships with nature; where the resources that form its urban metabolism are managed and distributed. Besides, the ‘black box’ is the space where many subaltern socio-political relationships remain concealed. In short, Aarhus’ ‘black box’ is the collection of architectures where nature is urbanised, and certain governance frameworks are fixed and inscribed. And, in spite of all this, it has mostly remained invisible. What happens if we open the urban ‘black box’? During this workshop we shall open Aarhus’ urban ‘black boxes’ to render visible the invisible layers of the city; to rethink Aarhus’ urban political ecology; to find some architectural tools to open up the possibility of new forms of civic participation and engagement; to tackle other cohabitation frameworks within today’s urban challenges. proyectoRendering visible the invisible Aarhus An ‘invisible city’ or ‘black box’ runs parallel to the day-to-day surface of Aarhus, remaining […]

SYNCRONIC CAPSULE
Time Capsule #festivala
'Wormhole Syncronic Capsule' ABSTRACT1st Speculative Architecture Festival How is the legacy stablished? How do we represent the future generations in our architecture designs? During this day we shall design a device to communicate with the future peoples: a time capsule will become our syncronic wormhole to connect past present, and future. Throughout the workshop, we shall collect the wonderful evidences that will make up the memory of what is worth remembering. The last day, we shall perform a collective ritual to close and bury the capsule that will only be opened by the inhabitants of the future. The capsule will remain burried during the next 100 years at Finca Torreponsa. Therefore, none of us will see its content anymore. We have the responsibility to inform someone about the location of the the capsule. Only the designated inheritors will be able to access to the content in 2116. To finish, we shall set up a digital chronometer that will indicate the countdown for the next 100 years, until the opening day. We shall all commit ourselves to keep the secret of the location of the capsule and we shall be in charge of choosing the heir to whom we shall give […]

INCIDENTS
performance #susiesierra
the ghosts of susie sierra mde ABSTRACTThis research, developed by elii and choreographer Jonathan Martineu, studies the apparently dull architectures of car crash test centres as locations where civility is designed. This centres are spaces for performances, somewhere between a laboratory, a theatre and a film stage. These architectures are outfitted to represent everyday life: our bodies and their pathologies; our lives and their dangers; day-to-day lives and the accidents that threaten them; social roles and dissidences; the tolerable and intolerable aspects of our conducts; the discipline and lack thereof of our bodies. In short, they are spaces to portray a pacified ‘good world in common’. The history of the evolution of crash tests is a history of the evolution of the meanings that have been ascribed to ‘safe’, ‘suitable’, ‘convenient’ or ‘normal’... therefore to normativity. After a general introduction around the exhibition The voices of GPS, the research carried out around crash tests and the art of butoh, a space of interaction between the public and the piece The Ghost of Susie Sierra is proposed. The public is invited to participate in the work process that Jonathan Martineu and elii have been developing during the past weeks for the […]
