As in the last two editions, VdV activities spread out over the 21 districts of the Villa of Madrid to bring it closer to the people. On one hand, the festival travels around the city. On the other hand, the people of Madrid are invited to explore different public spaces around town. The project starts off by mapping out the districts for different kinds of public spaces that will be conditioned with temporary interventions to develop the different events at this dynamic festival. The main goal of Mad + Mad is to activate and benefit from Madrid's heterogeneous heritage, opening it up to a multiple, contemporary view. The project develops in accordance with the following methodology:  1. Research. The first step is to get an up-close look at Madrid by analyzing the local historical context of each district in the city. 2. Contact with local agents. Getting in touch with neighbors, organizations, and different institutions can help bring people closer together to understand the complexities and […]

HOM SIEOTEO
domestic prototype #domesticfictions

101 · 홈 시어터 - HOM SIEOTEO Domestic Prototype for Next Home, Seoul Living (in) black boxes     ABSTRACT  Hom Sieoteo is a prototype of a home designed for Next Home (Seoul, 2017)*, conceived as a domestic theatre where day-to-day fictions can be activated. Our every day lives are a sort of soap opera. Therefore, this "domestic black box" is designed as a transformable stage, enabled for the choreography, rehearsal, action and fiction of daily life. Its spaces are equipped to intensify the performing experience of the users’ bodies, to test and question their social roles, to rehearse their shared imageries, to test their subjectivity and to explore the potentiality of the ordinary.  This project hinges on a dual strategy: on the one hand, a simple distribution optimises the functionality of this small 50m2 space. On the other hand, the walls, ceilings and floors are fitted with a series of devices that allow multiple domestic configurations: sliding panels, hatches, secret spaces, fold-down mechanisms, furniture that hangs from the ceiling and are actuated by mechanisms, etc, that allow dwellers to deploy different domestic settings in the apartment. Hom Sieoteo is configured as a performing black box, a ‘domestic theatre’ where dwellers […]

Following last year’s strategy, the various activities and events of the VdV (which used to be clustered in downtown Madrid in previous editions) will be spread throughout the city for 2017. The spaces of its 21 districts will therefore be turned into stages for the activities of this traditional Madrid festival. During the two months of the festival, citizens are encouraged to wander through the city, explore it and meet up with/in it. One of the main goals of the project is to let citizens and visitors rediscover Madrid through experience, to open a world of possibilities for public spaces in Madrid. The project is based on the mapping of the Centro, Arganzuela, Retiro, Salamanca, Chamberí, Tetuán, Chamartín, Fuencarral - El Pardo, Moncloa - Aravaca, Latina, Carabanchel, Usera, Puente de Vallecas, Moratalaz, Ciudad […]

P.N.S GENERAL VARA DEL REY
public space #openblackbox

037 · P.N.S GENERAL VARA DEL REY Opening the Black Box ABSTRACTProyecto piloto para el Proyecto Madrid Centro Pilot Project for the Proyecto Madrid Centro General Vara del Rey square is a popular spot in downtown Madrid, and its claim to fame stems mainly from the Rastro street market that is held there every Sunday. This project integrates a solar farming power infrastructure within the city centre, redefining the environmental policy by means of a social-technical hybrid. The generated power shall be channelled to the network through a single connection point. The economic profit shall be used to pay for the square. The design proves how integrated technical facilities provide a chance to not only improve the power performance of cities but also to allow citizen participation in the power management processes. Energy facilities are both an urban infrastructure and a means of communication for citizens. The square is an interface that explains the power production and management and translates them into spatial codes by means of various indicators that are integrated within the technical devices. The information is translated from an expert data language to easy formats that the public can read.PROJECTGeneral Vara del Rey square is a popular […]

073 · LAS aRQUITECTURAS DE ROBINSON CRUSOE The architectures of individualism ABSTRACT[Script of the video:] The story of Robinson Crusoe is normally told as a battle between man and nature. But, in reality, what the novel demonstrates is the transformation of the island into a cinema set. Robinson Crusoe is a fiction within a fiction. The heroic castaway, alone facing danger, is nothing but an actor that performs a script, playing a role on a stage. Robinson Crusoe is a representation within a representation He gradually transforms the island with small architectural interventions so that his show can begin. Robinson Crusoe survives on the island thanks to the vocabularies of morals and work, but inhabits a set thanks to techniques of drama. Robinson Crusoe does not desire, he only reproduces. HE does not allow himself to be transformed by the island, he only replicates. He does not allow room for other possible worlds in his vain pursuit of a phantasmatic original. Robinson Crusoe it is the fiction which fantasises with the elimination of experience and the fantastical. Robinson Crusoe is composed as a coral myth: the first Best Seller in the English language is now being disseminated through multiple […]

SOLAR FACTOR
Urban Strategy #energíasolar

025 · solar factor Productive Public Spaces ABSTRACTStrategic study for the integration of photovoltaic energy in the centre of Madrid Comission. Madrid City Council. 2007. Completed This strategic study is part of a plan developed by the City Hall of Madrid. The objective was to evaluate the impact of the installation of photovoltaic energy devices in the city and examine the spatial, social and architectural possibilities offered by the integration of technological devices in the centre of Madrid. The study includes seven basic sections: -Current status of the situation -Strategic cartography -Energy management, feasibility study and energy potential -Spatial impact and integration -Communication and socialization -Case studies -Conclusions Conventional calculation formats are adapted to the specific urban morphology of Madrid and an applied methodology is developed. By this procedure we obtain an evaluation of the feasibility of each case scenario with regards to the use of the generated electricity and the city’s photovoltaic energy potential. As opposed to most city infrastructure networks, which run in a silent and invisible manner, photovoltaic energy needs direct exposure to solar radiation. This entails unprecedented scenarios in urban environments. The study also contemplated the spatial impact of this technology. Its architectural potential also constitutes […]

050 · AUTUM 2009 Cartography of itineraries AbstractCatalogue Exhibition Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid [Fragment of Abstract from the exhibition] Valcárcel Medina devises a series of circumstances that arise during the autumn of 2009 in different places of the Museum. Despite the infrequency of the presentation of the artist’s works at the Museum Reina Sofía, he states: "I do not intend to do anything unusual, but help the public to intervene in them. I do not want something cryptic but accessible, communicable, but not in the sense of using the overused channels that do not cause interest or concern in the public”. More than a catalog, it is an artist materials’ book. Materials through which he maps the itineraries and documents the interventions and actions carried out. During 3 months, Elii carried out the technical assistance to Isidoro Valcárcel Medina mapping the spaces and works of the permanent collection of the MNCARS.    project1. Histories. Tone Up Your Body Up and Down !     ABSTRACTInstallation for CIVA (Centre International pour la Ville, l'Architecture et le Paysage), Bruselas Exhibition. 8.06 > 23.09.2012 New bodies for contemporary challenges. The JF•Kit House (Jane Fonda Kit House) renders a possible future where citizens produce part of their domestic energy requirements with with their own muscles, with their dayly physical activities. Thinking of any stage of energy development entails “reinventing” a new culture, and the body is a central battlefield in the articulation of sustainable controversies where this new culture ‘embodies’.  This exploration takes place through four different scales of sustainability. 1) Urban scale, by offering an replicable model to increase the urban density of the existing urban fabrics, based in light and cheap construction. The prototype is a self-sufficient and off-the-grid ‘parasitic’ structure that can be added onto existing rooftops and walls. 2) Architectural scale, by investigating how the design of the house as an active energy production unit transforms the domestic space. 3) Economic scale, by offering a model to ‘unblackbox’ domestic energy consumption patterns through the use of different display devices, and through the implementation of ‘energy mortgages’ […]
