AUTUM 2009
cartography #ValcárcelMedina #reinasofía

050 · AUTUM 2009 Cartography of itineraries AbstractCatalogue Exhibition Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid [Fragment of Abstract from the exhibition] Valcárcel Medina devises a series of circumstances that arise during the autumn of 2009 in different places of the Museum. Despite the infrequency of the presentation of the artist’s works at the Museum Reina Sofía, he states: "I do not intend to do anything unusual, but help the public to intervene in them. I do not want something cryptic but accessible, communicable, but not in the sense of using the overused channels that do not cause interest or concern in the public”. More than a catalog, it is an artist materials’ book. Materials through which he maps the itineraries and documents the interventions and actions carried out. During 3 months, Elii carried out the technical assistance to Isidoro Valcárcel Medina mapping the spaces and works of the permanent collection of the MNCARS.    project1. Histories. History is declined in multiple ways. Towards a pluralistic hermeneutics of art. 2. The criterion as focal point. Methodologies that reveal the museum as a device. The exhibition criterion, the architecture and the ways of narrating History become the artwork. 3. Plans and maps. Mapping […]

088 · REE Calviá Techniques for technical updating ABSTRACTNew maintenance centre for Red Eléctrica de España (Spanish electrical utility), Santa Ponsa Calviá (Majorca) The invitation to the competition called for the construction of a New Maintenance Centre for Red Eléctrica de España in the middle of a rough terrain in Santa Ponsa with nothing but a few nearby buildings. The project revolves around three main strategies: (1) Resource implementation and management. The former is based on the reformulation and update of some of the traditional implementation formulas in the region. For instance, the building reuses the stone fences of the traditional structures of the island, such as talayots, to define the physical boundaries of the project, thereby integrating a modern space connected to an infrastructure programme within an extraordinary environment such as that of Calviá. The proposal also incorporates the traditional water collection system by means of tiles. This technical principle is translated into the geometry of the roof, which collects the rainwater and channels it to cisterns installed in the courtyards. The building itself is thus configured as a water treatment unit. Finally, the geometry of the roof allows high spans to be opened in the work rooms to […]

015 · P.N.S SANTO DOMINGO Opening the technological black box memoriaCompetition of ideas for the restructuring and development of Callao and Santo Domingo squares and Preciados and Jacometrezo streets. Competition. Runner Up All architectural and urban actuations within a city context necessarily involve a socio ecological intervention upon the surroundings. Thus, our proposal for the design of Callao and Santo Domingo squares and Preciados and Jacometrezo streets is more than a compositional or aesthetic exercise: it is the design of a productive space for the city, as well as a space to raise ecological awareness. Power generation will cover the construction costs in the long term. The project revolves around three integrated systems: firstly, a system for the arrangement of the public space based on different trajectories that guarantee accessibility. Secondly, a power system that participates in the city’s infrastructural processes. Finally, a range of plant species that includes ground cover and tree species. This serves to configure a hybrid and diverse urban landscape that participates in the political urban ecology of the centre of Madrid. The starting point for this strategy is the addition and combination of a modular power management device, a basic prefabricated structure that can adapt […]

033 · GUANTANAMO FURNITURE Vritual Institution   ABSTRACTFurniture design for the Alicia Framis' Guantanamo Museum Alicia Framis’s “Welcome to Guantanamo Museum” exhibition studies the conversion of Guantanamo prison into a museum. In order to reach this goal, it has brought together a network of artists, architects and designers to cover all aspects of the new museum. Elii was entrusted by this virtual institution to design the furniture for the new Guantanamo Museum. Elii designed an assembly system for all the exhibition furniture using the mesh from the prison cells in the Guantanamo Bay base. This “reinserts” the prison materials and gives them a second life: that which was used to confine is now used as main element of the furniture which will hold the works exhibited in the museum. The assembly system is based in the upright stacking of 15x15 corrugated welded steel mesh, placed parallel and separated 1cm to each other. By superimposing the mesh, previously cut to match the shape of each piece of furniture, we obtain the general volume of each piece. The sections of mesh are then post-tensioned with steel rings that shape the ensemble, making it work uniformly and stiffening the piece of furniture. Thanks to […]

022 · ELECTROFLOwErS Electrofloweers for a cyborgarden    ABSTRACT* Selected work for the Arquia Próxima Award Interior Design and Refurbishment. Arquia Foundation, Caja de Arquitectos, 2008 Lighting and irrigation infrastructure prototypes for a garden in Aravaca, Madrid The project, situated in the small garden of a single-family home in the outskirts of Madrid is conceived as a hybrid space made up of greenery and maintenance elements. The irrigation and lighting infrastructure is just another element of this garden full of plants and machines. The “cyborgarden” is also a communicative device which interacts with the members of the household.PROJECT* Selected work for the Arquia Próxima Award Interior Design and Refurbishment. Arquia Foundation, Caja de Arquitectos, 2008 Electroflowers for a cyborgarden 1. Constant. A garden in Madrid is a luxury that requires a sophisticated technological deployment to ensure the plants’ wellbeing. What happens when both strata (garden + infrastructure) are configured as a constant? 2. Black box. This technological stratum (where a good deal of resources are invested) often remains hidden, locked up and out of reach of the final user. In the electro-garden, however, the infrastructures are not hidden, but surge in the form of electro-flowers that cohabit with the rest […]

029 · Letters for Heaven Device for Mourning memoriaMonument "Letters for Heaven" for Alicia Framis This monument is situated in an open space and its purpose is that of allowing people to say farewell to their loved ones. The goal of the piece is to create an intimate space where to write a letter and say farewell to one’s dearly departed. The piece is a cylinder made up of twelve vertical ribbons (one for each month of the year) which are in constant movement. Each ribbon consists of a chain of letterboxes with a mirror-like surface rotating slowly, each at a different speed, reflecting light both inside and outside. The structure consists of three thirteen-sided regular polygon horizontal rings 1.60m long, which serve as axes for the rotation mechanism. The rings are stabilized by crosses that create a light structure, making the most of the cylindrical shape. At one end, the rings surrounding the cylinder and the crosses are interrupted to make room for sliding doors, the leaves of which hide behind the ribbons when opened. The intimate inside space is isolated from the outside by means of a fabric that envelops it and hides the inside mechanisms. The structure extends […]

STAR WAREHOUSE
Housing #aliciaframis

047 · star warehouse Domesticity in Outer Space ABSTRACTTwo houses in outer space and one on the moon The artist Alicia Framis commissions elii the design of a series of living spaces to reflect on domestic conditions in outer space. Superfluous and infraordinary domestic situations of daily life are considered in these new conditions; those superfluous things that, nevertheless, become essential to inhabit a space. In each of the projects, some of the most frequently highlighted categories in the newspapers real estate ads are translated to outer spaces. Therefore, concepts such as “a room with a view” (to the moon) or “extensive storage” for the accumulation of useless objects (in zero gravity conditions) are tested. Also situations like taking a nap (when the bodies float and there are no differences between floor and walls) or an aerobics workout class watching the TV are also planned. In space, as on Earth, everyday life invents itself.PROJECT1. STAR WAR DROBE. In outer space there are no hangers because hangers work by gravity, so how do we store our objects in outer space? Where do we store all the things we teleshop? The disorder in a house without gravity is nothing but hundreds of […]

003 · PARNÜ Domestic landscapes ABSTRACTEuropan VII - Sub-Urban Challenge, Urban Intensity and Housing Diversity. International Competition. Runner Up. The master plan combines an urban development strategy with a landscape operation, providing a solution for the new city limit for Pärnu: a transition between the city and the sea, in a balance between the natural shore and the existing fabric. Main urban strategy: (1) Detection of water areas and the rare flora zones. Natural spaces are respected in order to preserve their ecological values and environmental qualities. (2) Identification of ‘areas of opportunity’ that define potential urban growth. (3) Connection of plots. A main road sews the areas, structuring the whole, and guaranteeing mobility through the site. The main road will act as the guideline for the future development. (4) A strip of services and facilities is settled along the main road. Local shops, public services, sports and cultural facilities, etc., activate the neighbourhoods and create a new linear centrality for public and private investment. (5) Secondary streets articulate the connectivity within the city and complete the proposal. Existing paths on site are respected, reinforced and complemented with an alternative cycling road network. Housing units ‘grow’ around a free network […]

005 · STAND COAM Air Quality Policies   ABSTRACTStand for the College of Architects of Madrid (COAM), Construtec Fair 04 *First Prize. Competition, 2004. Completed *FAD Opinion Award. 2005 *Award of the Official College of Architects of Madrid “A la Obra bien hecha”. 2006 In 2004, the Official College of Architects of Madrid (COAM) issued a tender for the design of its stand for the Construtec ‘04 business fair. The presence of COAM in this sort of business fairs is merely representative, as, given its nature as a Professional College or Association, it does not sell construction products, dealing only in information. Elii’s winning bid designed a room that served as a meeting point for architects. The stand was defined as an inside space, a drawing room to receive visits, a room presenting visitors with the best Architecture has to offer: a spatial experience. The Project makes the most of the pavilion’s artificial lighting and defines its space by means of a play on lights. The stand is made up of a single element, artificial light: the space is developed between two fibre optic surfaces which absorb the functions and adapt to the program required by the institution, creating a […]
