049 · lo savio Esordi, spazio-luce, filtri, metalli, progetti, articulación totali....Francesco Lo Savio   ABSTRACTExhibition at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid [Abstract from the exhibition] The work of artist Francesco Lo Savio (Rome, 1935 - Marseille, France, 1963) is displayed individually for the first time in Spain through this exhibition, which compiles a wide range of works realised over a five year period. It features paintings from his early period, monochromes, filters, metal works, and his Articolizioni totali (total articulations) in addition to a series of works related to architecture, a discipline he studies before immersing himself in painting. Lo Savio becomes one of the most preeminent figures on international art scene in the second half of the 20thcentury, but his work remained in relative obscurity for a number of decades due to both his premature death at the age of 28 and also the difficulty in classifying a body of work deemed too radical at the time and, consequently, misunderstood. Today he is considered one of the key precursors to American Minimalism and conceptual art in Europe. In just five years, he goes from producing paintings with certain principles of Informalism, still dominant in Italy […]

075 · a.l.e Architecture Light Embassy ABSTRACTPavilion for the “Architecture Beyond Now” exhibition of the Universidad Europea de Madrid in Centro-Centro, Madrid Architecture Beyond Now. A year ago the Universidad Europea de Madrid launched this theme for its students to study: what will architecture be in the future? How to build the new world starting now? How do we organize the contexts in other possible ways? The body of work presented here is the result of a year of reflections, projects, discussions and assessments around this question; that brings to our present a space built by Architecture Beyond Now. ALE (Architecture Light Embassy) The exhibition is divided into two transversal spaces. On the one hand, a set of answers where, from different perspectives, subjects and disciplines, the problem is addressed. Overall, an organized set of replicas, that build an inmaterial production of projects, drawings and models, which have joined in a virtual space: a blog that collates the proposals resulting from the students’ assessment of this brief. On the other hand, a meeting point, located between the immaterial space of knowledge and the physical experience of the body: an embassy between the two environments, configured by a device that […]

086 · flap! Deploying spaces Complete refurbishment of a home in Madrid ABSTRACTFlap! is a complete refurbishment project for a family that is moving to a house on the ground floor of an isolated house, surrounded by a courtyard that is shared by three owners.   The main purpose of the project is to completely renovate this old structure, optimising the use of the space, by using simple mechanisms of folding, drop-down and sliding panels to configure different domestic layouts, always favouring the connection with the perimeter courtyard. The proposal is based on a simple premise: the supporting wall that crosses the floor marks the separation between the public area of the house and the private area (bedrooms, toilet, bathroom and laundry room).   The public area comprises the kitchen, dining room and living room. It is a continuous space that includes two partition mechanisms to create different arrangements. The first partition is transparent and is formed by folding and sliding panels. It can be used to separate the living room from the kitchen while maintaining the spatial and visual continuity and allowing light through the openings. The second partition is deployed from the wall to separate an office […]

073 · LAS aRQUITECTURAS DE ROBINSON CRUSOE The architectures of individualism ABSTRACT[Script of the video:] The story of Robinson Crusoe is normally told as a battle between man and nature. But, in reality, what the novel demonstrates is the transformation of the island into a cinema set. Robinson Crusoe is a fiction within a fiction. The heroic castaway, alone facing danger, is nothing but an actor that performs a script, playing a role on a stage. Robinson Crusoe is a representation within a representation He gradually transforms the island with small architectural interventions so that his show can begin. Robinson Crusoe survives on the island thanks to the vocabularies of morals and work, but inhabits a set thanks to techniques of drama. Robinson Crusoe does not desire, he only reproduces. HE does not allow himself to be transformed by the island, he only replicates. He does not allow room for other possible worlds in his vain pursuit of a phantasmatic original. Robinson Crusoe it is the fiction which fantasises with the elimination of experience and the fantastical. Robinson Crusoe is composed as a coral myth: the first Best Seller in the English language is now being disseminated through multiple […]

Tone Up Your Body Up and Down !     ABSTRACT* Selected work in the XII Bienal Española de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, 2013 Installation for CIVA (Centre International pour la Ville, l'Architecture et le Paysage), Bruselas Exhibition. 8.06 > 23.09.2012 New bodies for contemporary challenges. The JF•Kit House (Jane Fonda Kit House) renders a possible future where citizens produce part of their domestic energy requirements with with their own muscles, with their dayly physical activities. Thinking of any stage of energy development entails “reinventing” a new culture, and the body is a central battlefield in the articulation of sustainable controversies where this new culture ‘embodies’.  This exploration takes place through four different scales of sustainability. 1) Urban scale, by offering an replicable model to increase the urban density of the existing urban fabrics, based in light and cheap construction. The prototype is a self-sufficient and off-the-grid ‘parasitic’ structure that can be added onto existing rooftops and walls. 2) Architectural scale, by investigating how the design of the house as an active energy production unit transforms the domestic space. 3) Economic scale, by offering a model to ‘unblackbox’ domestic energy consumption patterns through […]

094 · mad + Exploring Madrid of 'Earthly delights’ Urban strategy for the Veranos de la Villa 2016   ABSTRACTUrban strategy for the Veranos de la Villa 2016 Mad + (‘Madrid of earthly delights’) is a strategic project to deploy the programme of the Veranos de la Villa (VdV) festival throughout the urban fabric of Madrid. The various activities and events of the VdV, which used to be clustered in downtown Madrid in previous editions, will be spread throughout the city for 2016. The spaces of its 21 districts will therefore be turned into stages for the activities of this traditional Madrid festival. During the two months of the festival, citizens are encouraged to wander through the city, explore it and meet up with/in it. One of the main goals of the project is to let citizens and visitors rediscover Madrid through experience, to open a world of possibilities for public spaces in Madrid. The project is based on the mapping of the Centro, Arganzuela, Retiro, Salamanca, Chamberí, Tetuán, Chamartín, Fuencarral - El Pardo, Moncloa - Aravaca, Latina, Carabanchel, Usera, Puente de Vallecas, Moratalaz, Ciudad Lineal, Hortaleza, Villaverde, Villa de Vallecas, Vicálvaro, San Blas  – Canillejas and Barajas districts, to pinpoint […]

016 · pool house From regulatory aesthetics to domestic experience ABSTRACTSingle-family home in Barajas, Madrid, Spain The project is located in the old part of the town of Barajas, in a small 4x8 m plot that shares median walls with two houses on the sides and that has a structure inside it. The main façade has a northwest heading. The project involves the demolition of a shed and its replacement with a new single-family house. The surface area of the plot is so small that it was all occupied. Regulations establish that openings can only be created on the front façade, so the living quarters were located there, thus guaranteeing ventilation, sunlight and a view to the street. The non-living areas and the staircase were placed at the rear. The basic project includes a living room with a fitted kitchen on the ground floor; a bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and a dressing room on the first floor; a toilet in the staircase landing; and a second bedroom in the loft, with access to a terrace. The offset sections allow the installation of a 2 m2 and 1.55 m deep swimming pool on the terrace. This pool provides natural lighting […]

Completed *FAD Opinion Award. 2005 *Award of the Official College of Architects of Madrid “A la Obra bien hecha”. 2006 In 2004, the Official College of Architects of Madrid (COAM) issued a tender for the design of its stand for the Construtec ‘04 business fair. The presence of COAM in this sort of business fairs is merely representative, as, given its nature as a Professional College or Association, it does not sell construction products, dealing only in information. Elii’s winning bid designed a room that served as a meeting point for architects. The stand was defined as an inside space, a drawing room to receive visits, a room presenting visitors with the best Architecture has to offer: a spatial experience. The Project makes the most of the pavilion’s artificial lighting and defines its space by means of a play on lights. The stand is made up of a single element, artificial light: the space is developed between two fibre optic surfaces which absorb the functions and adapt to the program required by the institution, creating a […]
