091 · TENSEGRITY Reforma de piso para Clínica de fisioterapia, Madrid Intervención reversible    ABSTRACTThe aim of this project is to rehab an old flat in Madrid's fashionable Retiro district and turn it into a physiotherapy clinic, but on the condition that the space can be returned to its original state at any time. The strategy in mind is based on the following minor interventions: 1. Reorganizing the layout. A new arrangement is proposed to optimize the use of space to fit the new program, thereby ensuring proper pathways for patients and personnel as well as laying out public and private areas. It incorporates moveable room dividers to split up the space to suit the week's activities, adding a new flair to each place. 2. New furnishings. New furniture, such as a reception counter at the entrance, to welcome everyone who comes to the clinic. These furnishings contrast with the staid, classic nature of the property and add a refreshing, innovative language into the spaces. Nevertheless, being covered in mirrors, they play on different reflections and perceptions and even become invisible in certain positions. 3. Lighting project. The new lighting project makes the best use of natural light and ensures […]

095 · LETTO Refurbishment of a home in Madrid ABSTRACTRefurbishment of a home in Madrid Project for the refurbishment of an old flat in downtown Madrid, for ‘anonymous’ residents that will be sharing their domestic space in the future. The proposal is arranged around six strips with alternating living areas and service areas. This arrangement optimises the floor space while also guaranteeing the utmost functional flexibility and the incorporation of other possible programmes, such as co-working spaces, a study, offices, etc. A wooden box is installed on the entry axis to divide the space into a public area and a private area, although the system employs a number of swivelling and sliding doors to improve the choice of circulations within the house so that it is possible to lead independent lives while sharing the common elements. The living room and the kitchen-dining room are configured by means of a piece of furniture that acts as a filter with the street: it is used to sort the accesses, lighting, the technical functions and the storage functions, as well as the library for both rooms. There are even some hidden compartments and a fold-down table. Simple changes of material in the paving, […]

105 · mad + mad Distributed festival Urban strategy for Veranos de la Villa 2018   ABSTRACTMad + Mad is a strategic project to turn the Veranos de la Villa into a distributed festival. As in the last two editions, VdV activities spread out over the 21 districts of the Villa of Madrid to bring it closer to the people. On one hand, the festival travels around the city. On the other hand, the people of Madrid are invited to explore different public spaces around town. The project starts off by mapping out the districts for different kinds of public spaces that will be conditioned with temporary interventions to develop the different events at this dynamic festival. The main goal of Mad + Mad is to activate and benefit from Madrid's heterogeneous heritage, opening it up to a multiple, contemporary view. The project develops in accordance with the following methodology:  1. Research. The first step is to get an up-close look at Madrid by analyzing the local historical context of each district in the city. 2. Contact with local agents. Getting in touch with neighbors, organizations, and different institutions can help bring people closer together to understand the complexities and […]

These nodes serve as the bases from where to tackle globalisation by implementing various work programmes. In short, the AECID is a network, a matrix to connect and interact with various contexts of the world. The AECID space in the ARCO 2018 International Contemporary Art Fair is another node in this network, so its stand in this edition of ARCO transcends its physical boundaries and becomes a link to other geographies, other cultures, other scales, other temporalities, other languages, other technologies. ARCoop is an infinite surface, an opening that connects the circuits of Contemporary Art and the cross-border matrix of the AECID. It is an effort to understand ARt and COoperation (AR-CO) from experience. Visitors to the fair will discover that one of its main corridors has no end: eerie infinite depths framed by abstract geometries invite visitors into a new dimension. On the other side lies an indoor […]

093 · SAVE THE CHILDREN Affection Architecture ABSTRACTRefurbishment of the building in the Plaza de Puerto Rubio for the Save The Children Foundation, Madrid The building for Save The Children Foundation is a strategic point in the San Diego neighbourhood for the social work that this NGO carries out in the Vallecas area. The project involves the refurbishment and extension of the current building so as to address the needs of a child care centre. The proposal is based on adding a new body that is suspended over the existing structure. This extends the building and configures a new façade, as well as a new communications and service core. The following operations are projected: 1. Refurbishment of the architectural support. A series of architectural actuations serve to update the body of this 1950s building: (a) refurbishment and consolidation of the existing structure. (b) Partial demolition of the rear of the building to integrate a new communications and service core, in compliance with current regulations guaranteeing the technical and functional performance of the main rooms. (c) Extension of the top floor, which uses up the allowed building surface with a two-level space, arranged between two terraces to favour cross-ventilation. (d) Refurbishment […]

097 · Yojigen Poketto “4D Pocket” Complete refurbishment of an apartment in Madrid ABSTRACT* Finalist Archdaily's 2018 Building of the Year Awards, in the Interior Architecture Category * Shortlisted for Premis Fad 2018 Complete refurbishment of an apartment in Madrid A dual strategy is applied to this project: Firstly, the floor plan arrangement is based on an L-shaped service band that integrates the access, wet areas, storage areas and leisure spaces. This frees up the main area, which opens up to the windows and balconies to create a brightly lit atmosphere. The intimate areas are therefore secluded and sheltered from view from the entrance. On the other hand, the apartment is arranged into two levels: the level at the elevation of the entrance and the main room, plus a second level, 90 centimetres higher up, extending beyond the kitchen surface, where the leisure area and the bathroom are located. The two elevations not only allow different atmospheres to be arranged, but also integrate ‘additional’ functions in the house, such as a deep bathtub in the bathroom, a storage area under the bed, part of the facilities, etc, thus optimising every cubit metre of the house. Secret trapdoors extend the storage […]

055 · HOUSE OF WOULD Industrialising fictions ABSTRACT*COAM Award (Official Professional Association of Architects of Madrid), 2013 *Selected work for the EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award, 2015. Pre industrised in Pedrezuela, Madrid This house is located in a 1,316 m2 sloping plot of land in the district of Pedrezuela, 45 km north of Madrid. There is little to no vegetation in the section closest to the street, which nevertheless provides a good viewpoint on the surrounding lush natural landscape. The building is made up of seven wooden-structure modules symmetrically identical surrounding a central court. Each module is dedicated to a different domestic situation, according to its functional needs. The modular structure, as well as the scale of the rooms allows the alteration of this functional logic, serving as a support for possible future layouts. The house adapts to the plot of land in a layered fashion depending on the different degrees of privacy needed: private rooms are hidden from the street and adapt to the terrain giving a feeling of being in direct contact with the plot. The more public spaces are closer to the street and gain height gradually, until they […]

Following last year’s strategy, the various activities and events of the VdV (which used to be clustered in downtown Madrid in previous editions) will be spread throughout the city for 2017. The spaces of its 21 districts will therefore be turned into stages for the activities of this traditional Madrid festival. During the two months of the festival, citizens are encouraged to wander through the city, explore it and meet up with/in it. One of the main goals of the project is to let citizens and visitors rediscover Madrid through experience, to open a world of possibilities for public spaces in Madrid. 048 · urban TREES Keep fit while you take care of the 'Urban Tree'! ABSTRACTKeep fit while you take care of the 'Urban Tree' This device explores the social dimension of sustainability: It is designed to enrol people in sustainable matters and practices. The Urban Tree visualizes the functions that a common tree performs in the everyday life of a city. The top part configures a marquee featuring solar photovoltaic panels and vegetation panels for plants. The supports are especially designed as urban furniture, exhibiting benches and cycling points. The Urban Trees are meeting points and exercise areas. When you cycle at the tree, you generate the energy that waters the plants and supplies electricity for the illumination. But, at the same time, while cycling at the tree you look after yourself. The tree needs your care to survive. Energy Transformation The Urban Tree produces energy, based in a combined system: - Bicycles, that produce electricity while you pedal. Power: 50Wp / per bike - PV Infrastructure, that transforms solar radiation into electricity. 36 photovoltaic basic units. Power: 5Wp / per unit. Plant Care When you cycle at the tree, you generate the energy that waters the plants and […]

089 · carrIAGES FOR THE THREE KINGS Travelling on a constellation   ABSTRACT* First Award COAM -ex aequo- (Official Professional Association of Architects of Madrid), 2017 * Finalist FAD Award. 2017 As the sun set on 5th January 2016, Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar travelled the streets of Madrid on constellations of light, to be welcomed by hundreds of thousands of children. The carriages of the Three Kings are built as a kaleidoscope of lights and mirrors, a dynamic optical device that is activated by the motion of the vehicles, playfully challenging the citizens' perception. The sides, formed by reflective aluminium pyramids, multiply the points of light and their depth, and are topped by a longitudinal platform that allows the to-ing and fro-ing of Their Royal Highnesses and their Assistants during the parade. A space for the utilities is also included inside. The geometry of the pyramids also ensures the generators are correctly ventilated. Platforms at the front and rear serve to stack the bags of sweets that will be handed out during the parade. Each of the carriages has a predominating colour that is nuanced with other shades, depending on the personality of each King: gold and indigo for Melchior, […]
